Effect of the Cultivars and the Harvest Seasons on Quality Preservation of Cut Rose

Abstract
Varietal and seasonal differences in quality preservation of cut rose were investigated. ¢¥Dia¢¥ was proved to have the best quality with the largest flower opening and the smallest degree of bent neck even though its vaselife was the shortest and its petal withering was the fastest. ¢¥Dayroo¢¥ was shown to have the worst quality in all aspects and ¢¥Mary de Vor¢¥ was shown to be the medium of the above two cultivars. In harvest seasons, the roses cut in winter had the vaselife twice as long and their flower opening was twice as slow and their bent neck was twice as weak as those harvested during summer. However, ¢¥Red Sandra¢¥ had longer vaselife and even smaller stem diameter as compared to ¢¥Aalsmeer Gold¢¥, ¢¥Dia¢¥, and ¢¥Marina¢¥. In conclusion, it was found that vaselife of cut flower was rather influenced by a genetic character than by morphological character such as stem size.
